Billy Liar
Billy Fisher is a Yorkshire lad living at home with his parents and
grandmother. Life as an undertaker’s clerk does not suit our Billy who
fills the days with constant dreaming and flights of fancy. Billy
yearns to escape his stifling existence. His hopes are raised by an
encouraging letter and the arrival in town of comic Danny Boon, from
whom Billy would like to write.
Our hero’s got himself a
reputation for inventing stories about himself and his family to make
life more interesting, earning himself the nickname 'Billy Liar'.
Naturally, Billy's lying extends to his romantic life. He’s proposed to
two different girls, the drippy Barbara and the brassy Rita, and lies
constantly to obtain the ring from one to return to the other. Adapted
from Keith Waterhouse’s 1959 novel Billy Liar is both insightful and
hugely entertaining.
